2014 Perception of Space in Architecture & Culture in Istanbul
—

The 3. International Summer School of Perception of Space in Architecture and Culture (POSIAC) will be held in Istanbul under the theme “Adhocratic Spaces” between the 15.07.14 and 27.07.14.

This year’s POSIAC:AS Summer School is specifically dedicated to an urban organism based on emergent spaces with disregard for any bureaucratic rules. The city offers a system of flexible and informal organisations understood as Adhocratic Spaces. The aim is to tackle these spaces through the affordances of patterns and behaviours that potentiate interior resonances.

Death of Architecture.

The photograph entitled "Death of Architecture" was choosen by National Geographic magazine in Turkey to address the proliferating problem of the misuse of architecture.

Death of Architecture aims to encourage a discourse by running parallel projects and promoting multidisciplinary team work.

Emosphera: An Autopoeitic Synaesthetic Space

Convened in Greece, the conference takes its theme from the conjunction of telos and tele, in the purposes and processes of art in the post-digital culture. At the centre of these considerations is Mind, and the rich variability of consciousness and reality, to which technoetic systems and syncretic creativity aspire.

Perception of Space in Architecture & Culture in Luzern

With the theme Sensory Living, this year‘s Summer School is specifically dedicated to interior spaces and regards these as experiential spaces. The aim is to transfer natural patterns to spatial situations in architecture and culture.

The Manta project was a collaborative work developed under the Reactive Acoustic Environments cluster wit ha research focus on contemporary adaptable acoustics and advance the state of the art into the realm of intuitive, reactive, gradient-based systems.

BioPhotonic Avatar

The BioPhotonic Avatar presented in the Future Places exhibition is based in a simulation addressing the opportunity of creating a Biophysical Soundscape. The main focus of the work is the interaction between generation and stimulation of artefacts with sound.

[f]Flat participated in the opening of the California NanoSystems Institute as one of the artists featured in TransLab.
The work presented entitled Solid Music is an installation that combines an interactive audiovisual space capable of reproducing its realtime instances into 3D stereolithographic models.

Part of the ongoing research, [f]FLAT presented the paper 'TransAcoustic Architecture' in the Internoise international acoustic conference.
The focus of the work is to create an architectural space that allows interaction between the transformation and the stimulation of artefacts with sound.
Such architecture can be defined as the incorporation of active, reactive, interactive and transactional properties of the space, responsive to sound according to algorithmic parameters.

The architectural research project entitled 'BioPhotonic Avatar' is presented at Epicentre Symposium.

The Epicentre Symposium is organized by the UC Digital Arts Research Network where participants from al' University of California campuses meet to discuss notions on Digital Arts.

This year the Media Arts and Technology department from UCSB choose the BioPhotonic Avatar to represent and engage in the close interaction between new media art, industry, and theory.

The 016 Urban Songline performance will be followed with a panel on sound & architecture Organised by Allard van Hoorn in collaboration with the Architectural Faculty of the Istanbul Technical University, [f]FLAT Architectures

The performance uses the sounds of the Istanbul within a reverberation room in order to correlate synaesthetic traits of the city.

POSIAC - Industrial Ruins.

"Augmented Reality" addresses how industrial ruins informs about our past and us, the difference lies in our perception of their revolutionary downfall. Our presence provides different observations, which oppose the over-coded, over-designed spaces of the city.

Industrial spaces and its ruins thrust the current a state of confusion, by offering glimpses of a recent machinic past through a mnemonic encounter between space machine and body.

Death of Architecture

The exhibition work entitled "Death of Architecture" was part of a myriad of works exhibited team of researchers,

interested in addressing the bleak use of architecture.

Vertical Interventions
—

In its third year, the AA Istanbul Visiting School, Vertical Interventions, in collaboration with Istanbul Technical University, will continue to rediscover verticality through novel generative design techniques and large-scale physical prototypes. Abstracted as a fusion of various sub-systems, each subsystem of the tower will be investigated in relation to their various performance criteria.

The correlations between the separate sets of performance criteria and evaluation methods will be analyzed, leading to the generation of unified design alternatives for a vertical system typology.

The lines and borders of contemporary national states present the observer with ideological and cultural frameworks that are no longer valid. Concepts of identity, cultural identifiers, nation state and belonging as well as place and time are challenged in both real and virtual contexts.

Connected Tower
—

“Connected Tower” tackles the challenge of radically decomposing the tower in order to liberate it from its current fixed typology dominated by the Modernist paradigm. The aim is to set the tower free from the existing binary axioms it is submerged in, which are epitomized as building and city, circulation and habitation, structure and skin.

“Connected Tower” redefines verticality as differentiated dynamic systems through computational processes. The tower becomes an extreme testing ground where it can evolve from being a solitary type to a novel vertical system described with the qualities of adaptation, integration, and fluidity.

Nurbulations
—

Presented in this platform for algorithm design, Nurbulations project is based on the morphogenetic process of Gastrulation. This process occurs in an early cell-embryo, in which the cell structure is established. Nurbulations artifact is a technical re-contextualization of biological elements and processes.

Emosphera
—

Represents an idiosyncratic logic of designing based on a set of biologic principles involved in the production of an object and the accomplishment of an environment, which includes architecture and media. The exploration merges space and media through embryologic procedures, in order to create an ubiquitous spatial envelope.

New Portuguese Architecture addresses a complementary and innovative phenomenon in the scope of the Portuguese contemporary architecture.

The article focuses on reaction to, old concepts and conservatives of traditions and ways to operate, to an affirmed intention, still with some shyness, to innovate the space and to construct it with concepts, materials and techniques that allow to live in full contemporary spaces.

Decoding the human genome and genetically modifying plants and animals present new challenges for artists, architects and designers: the borders between subject and object, between organic and inorganic material as well as artistic and virtual existence become increasingly fluid.
“The Gen(h)ome Project” deals with paradigm shifts in artistic responses to science, above all biology and genetics.
